Shiver me Twitters!
Google Buzz, the newest Google Labs project, is here! If you haven’t noticed, there’s a new icon in your GMail. Go ahead and have a look, we can wait…
Ok, let’s not get too excited, more like… iPad excited (for those of you in the know). This is kind of a “meh” product from Google. This is a company that has basically come to dominate the known interwebs, and has, over the years, come up with some game-changing technology. But come on, first android and now buzz, what is going on with the “me too” attitude Google is suddenly showing? Back in the day, and by back in the day I mean 2 or 3 years ago, Google was the leader of innovation and invention. What happened?
Well, it’s kinda simple, actually. The internet has changed. Once upon a time, Google’s brilliant web crawler could easily crawl its way around the internets, where it would look at the content of a blog or website, assign it a rank, and throw it up on the Google servers. Life was simple. Now, with the twitters of the world, Google has needed to be able to index not just websites, but blogs and people as well. Their problem, however, is that they do not own Twitter, and Twitter is unknown and virtually impossible to index for Google’s crawler. That’s mainly because Twitter is made up of segments of millions of people’s thoughts about every topic you can think of, and there’s no clearly defined subject matter for Google’s crawler to latch onto.
Enter Buzz.
Buzz is the way that Google indexes people and then ranks them in the same way as they rank websites. Not to mention, it’s a way for Google to jump on the micro-blogging bandwagon. So, how is this important to Google’s business in the future? Well, I’ll hand that over to Mr. Kevin Rose, co-founder of Digg and all around internet know-it-all, to explain.
The big question is this: how does this affect Social Media? Well, it’s simple really. Now, instead of one Twitter, we could have two, depending on whether or not it catches on the way Twitter did. Expect a year or so before Buzz becomes as mainstream as Twitter. Other than that, it’s just one more outlet and one more thing for the marketers of the world to worry about when they strategize a digital media package.
Check out what Google had to say on their offical blog.
The internet never makes it easy on us.
What do you think of Google’s Buzz?

Funny, not to long ago I was discussing Apple vs. Google with a few friends of mine (a regular Saturday night conversation around everyone’s table, I bet). Google seems to be tied up with up with new products versus innovative ones; following everybody to the market these days. If they continue down this road Google will loose its status as an innovative leader (I don’t really see that happening though), although I do believe Apple still leads the way down this path.
What do I think of Buzz? I don’t think it has really caught on yet, well at least with my friends anyway. All I get in my Buzz account are Tweets – speaking of Google’s innovativeness. It may pick up in time, but if regurgitating Tweets is Google’s idea of a social media site, then boys, it’s time to leave.
I think the bigger issue with Buzz is members are limited to those with Gmail accounts, a problem not experienced by other social sites. So, no Gmail, no Buzz…no problem? I don’t think Buzz is worth switching supermarkets for? Yet.
Now, Google Wave seems to be something different. Let’s see what they do with that.
Completely agree with that. You’ll never topple the giant that is Google, but they are becoming followers to a degree and I do wonder what that will do to them over time.
Haven’t tried Wave yet. I’ve heard good and bad things.
I agree. Google used to be an innovator. Ten years down the road, they have the potential to become another sad Microsoft — having been thoroughly beaten and just trying to hang on to their product line that became a standard back when it was cool.
I’m afraid there is only one Apple. Everyone else loses it when they become big.
I found this article on Mashable about social strategies for Google vs. Yahoo!. It relates to what we’re talking about. http://bit.ly/b8hcTF
I’ve been on Google Wave a few times. I haven’t figured it all out yet, but it seems like it could be very useful tool. It can serve many business functions, too. Unfortunately, it’s release was overshadowed by Buzz.
Interesting the different strategies Google and Yahoo employ. Just when you thought Yahoo was done huh.
And then I found this today…Google TV. http://tcrn.ch/9UfccU
