Confessions of a Plate Spinner
Some people are plate spinners, some are not….
I knew this guy, whom for three years was working as a marketer by day and running a small business by night. Doing his best to be a great employer, employee, husband and dad too.
He was of the impression that by being as busy as possible he would be pushing the ball up the field for his family, however, in reality all he was doing was stunting his growth.
In truth, plate spinning was leading down the road of mediocrity and a “good enough” mentality. When asked how he was, “okay” seemed to be a constant response.
Well after some soul searching, he removed himself from the small business, immediately finding stress leaving his body, being replaced by visions of opportunity.
The moral? If you are a plate spinner and you’re happy, congratulations and keep spinning. If you find yourself just treading water with too much on your plate, here’s a lifeline tip- get focused on that one thing you’re passionate about. Focus is the direction you want to drive in, but it’s passion that serves as the engine. Find that something you like, work it hard and you’ll find yourself on the road to contentment.
Oh, and that guy? It was me.

A very true message…inspirational
I agree great message. I to struggle with the plate spinning… from coaching 2 hockey teams, trying to get in shape myself and work plus any extra work or chores that may arise it’s definitely a balancing act.
It’s got to be a labour of love, so it doesn’t feel like work or a burden, i hope it never comes to be a burden cause man its been a great ride so far.
cheers Billy.
Good post Billy.

Great post. Plate spinning inevitably leads to burn out.
Love this post! I will be sure to forward it to my darling husband who is one of the biggest plate spinners I know.
The trouble with spinning you don’t realize you are just burning yourself out until its to late.
That’s it…..you have moved me Billy….I am canceling my saturday paper route. Spinning out = burning out . Been there.
